About Rebecca Cooper
Author, Diets Don’t Work®
“I asked one of my professors, ‘What are the best interventions to use with an eating disorder client?’ She said, ‘There is no intervention or theory that really produces recovery for eating disorders. Maybe that is what you are supposed to do.’ That remark touched something deep inside of me and I knew I had to try.”
Rebecca Cooper is a California licensed therapist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Board Certified Professional Counselor, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, international speaker, business owner, and author. She has counseled hundreds of patients struggling with issues pertaining to dieting, obesity, anorexia, bulimia, addictions, and disordered eating. Currently, her business Rebecca’s House Eating Disorder Treatment Programs™ in Orange County, California, provides residential care and outpatient clinical therapy to those suffering from eating disorders. She is the author of Diets Don’t Work®, the Diets Don’t Work® Workbook, Guided Imagery CDs, and instructional DVD’s.
Having survived a highly traumatic childhood – both she and her sister were left by their mother with a babysitter who never returned for them – Rebecca started to diet before she was even old enough to date. She knows all too well the emotional, psychological, and social consequences that come with living with an eating disorder.
At the peak of her suffering, the term ‘eating disorder’ had hardly been incorporated into common use much less used in common conversation. It took a gallant effort on Rebecca’s part to initiate her healing process but prevail she did through much self reflection, journaling, and therapy. Eventually returning to school for a broader understanding of the disease of eating addiction, Cooper considers herself healed.
Cooper created the Diets Don’t Work Structured Program® after she started working with clients who suffered from severe yo-yo dieting. With her understanding that the dieting was a mere surface reflection of a far larger issue, Cooper began an investigation of client thought patterns that triggered disordered eating. “Disordered eating is not just about the food,” says Cooper. “It is about the constant thoughts about food, weight, body image, or what to eat or not eat.”
Adds Cooper: “Diets are an external form of control. We will eventually go off the diet and gain the weight back plus more. Most people do not know when they are hungry or full. They are not connected to their appetite, feelings or true self. Recovery comes from the inside. When we focus on how we should act, look, eat, or feel we cut ourselves off from our natural, internal cues. The journey back to your authentic self allows you the freedom of honoring your body’s wisdom, emotions and eating behaviors.”Rebecca Cooper continues to help others discover the wisdom of Diets Don’t Work® by lecturing to thousands each year.
A native of West Virginia, Rebecca Cooper now bases her practice in Southern California. Receiving her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University, Ms. Cooper has been recognized as the “Rising Star in Business” by WomanSage©. Cooper currently oversees her team of licensed therapists, registered dietitians, counselors, exercise physiologist, tai chi and yoga instructors, acupuncturist, psychiatrist, and medical doctor in Orange County, California where they work together diligently to assist others in overcoming disordered eating.
